The Bad Gleichenberg campus of the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz is a university branch in Bad Gleichenberg in Vulkanland in Eastern Styria .

The courses have existed since 2001. The health resort is called the “smallest university town in the world”. Together with the Bad Gleichenberg State  Vocational School  (LBS BG) and the Bad Gleichenberg Tourism Schools (TS BG), the location offers relevant vocational training from apprenticeship to master’s degree .

history

Bad Gleichenberg is one of the oldest spa towns from the time of the monarchy (1843) and has natural mineral springs. The flourishing spa business came to a complete standstill in the course of the Second World War. That is why the Chamber of Commerce's catering school was founded in 1949 (founded in Pichl an der Enns in 1946, today TS) and the Landes berufsschule  (LBS) was founded in 1950/53 .

After the hospitality school had been gradually expanded into a comprehensive vocational middle and high school during the thermal boom of the 1980s, and the vocational school became the largest in Styria and the largest vocational school for tourism in Austria, the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences also began a course on site in 2001 . Bad Gleichenberg thus became, so to speak, the competence center for tourism for Southeast Austria.

There were teething problems, many students were upset about studying in the small provincial town, and there was only a secretary's office to supervise studies on site. The first year of this course built a certain infrastructure on their own, and the course, which proved to be successful, got its own building in 2004 next to the HLT / HLS.

In 2006, new courses in dietetics and occupational therapy were started, followed by master’s courses, and there were soon 350 students on site. In 2007/08, the school profile at the higher education institution was expanded from pure gastronomy to concepts for the health professions , and cooperation was further intensified.

In 2014, Elisabeth Schnegg-Primus, who had set up the chair for occupational therapy, left the team at the university to become a freelancer.

The FH Joanneum campus comprises three institutes (chairs, status 2014):

Currently (2014/15) the following courses are offered:

No tuition fees are charged for Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the FH Joanneum. The postgraduate master’s courses are chargeable.

Dormitories

There are two dormitories for students, one of the Austrian Young Workers Movement (ÖJAB-Haus Bad Gleichenberg student dormitory) , and another (private Bad Gleichenberg student dormitory ) , or the option of taking private rooms.

Structural matters

The campus of the university of applied sciences is directly adjacent to the campus of the tourism schools. "The most beautiful and most expensive place in the spa park " in Bad Gleichenberg. It is a Belle Époque hotel complex , which after its good years during and after the war was a hospital location , and was partly destroyed by fighting in the last weeks of the war and then rebuilt.

The building south of the old TS Hotel Possenhofen is the campus of the University of Applied Sciences (Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Straße 24). It was built in 2003 as a functional building.
