The Canal de Montech (German: Montech Canal ) is a French shipping canal that runs in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitania region .

Course and technical infrastructure

The canal connects the Canal latéral à la Garonne (German: Garonne-Seitenkanal ) with the valley of the Tarn . It branches off from the Garonne Lateral Canal at Montech and after a distance of 11 kilometers it reaches the town of Montauban , where it joins the Tarn River. The height difference is around 28 meters (depending on the river level) and is overcome by 10 locks . The water supply is ensured from the Garonne Lateral Canal.

history

In the first half of the 19th century, the Tarn between Albi and its confluence with the Garonne was navigable over a length of around 150 kilometers. Since the Garonne always had a very unsafe water flow, the Garonne Lateral Canal was built, which was put into operation in 1844 on the Toulouse-Montech-Montauban route. It was not until around 15 years later that the Garonne Lateral Canal was continued in its current route, making the Montech-Montauban section a branch canal. This route was heavily used by cargo ships until the beginning of the 20th century. After that, cargo shipping gradually lost its importance.

In 1990 the canal was closed for renovation work. It has been open again since 2003 and is mainly used by sports boats and houseboats . The connection to the Tarn was interrupted for years, but the double lock has been in operation again since 2011.
