Cancer bellianus is a crab from the family of crabs . The crab is native to the north-east Atlantic at depths of 700 meters and is similar to the edible crab. Cancer bellianus is onlyfishedas by-catch.

features

The carapace of Cancer bellianus is rather flat, broadly oval and, as with all edible crabs, significantly wider than it is long. Its back surface has small but noticeable tubercles and distinct furrows. On the front and side edges there are 9 or 10 square noses separated by small gaps, each with three small, sharp teeth. The scissors on the first pair of striding legs are the same size and have clear tubercles. The second to fifth pair of striding legs are uniform and have short bristles and small thorns.

The color of the carapace is pale brownish, speckled with dark brown to reddish spots. The fingers of the scissors and the thorns on the striding legs are black. The color of the hair tends towards yellow.

Cancer bellianus can reach a carapace of over 22 centimeters. The length of the carapace is then around 13 centimeters. Individuals of this size weigh around 2 kilograms (wet weight). Reaching sexual maturity is presumed to have a carapace of 13 centimeters. With the same carapace length, males have wider and longer claws than females.

The morphologically similar crab has a smoother carapace and the noses on the front edge have no teeth. His striding legs have no tips or thorns on the striding legs.

distribution

The cancer cancer bellianus is native to the Northeast Atlantic. It lives in sea depths of 37 to 700 meters near Madeira , the Canary Islands , off Morocco , the Azores , off the European Atlantic coast to around Ireland , as well as on the Shetland Islands and on the south coast of Iceland . The species seems to be more likely to occur on stony seabed.

Is fished cancer bellianus not targeted. Cancer bellianus is landed as bycatch in Portugal and on the African coast as well as in the Azores and is marketed locally.

Taxonomy

James Yate Johnson described Cancer bellianus using two individuals that were caught near Madeira. He named the species after the then President of the Linnean Society , Thomas Bell .
