Fischer von Waldheim , 1817

A tribe of the family of dogs (Canidae) is called real dogs ( Canini ) . They are represented on all continents; originally there were none in Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, Madagascar and Antarctica. But also in many of these regions they have become at home through naturalization by humans, especially in the form of the domestic dog and its wild forms such as the dingo .

Systematics

Real dogs are contrasted with real foxes (Vulpini), but there are also many species within real dogs that look like foxes and are therefore referred to as "foxes". The Canini are divided into the following genera:

In a system of dogs by Lindblad-Toh et al. 2005, which was based on molecular genetic studies, the real dogs were identified in their current compilation as a non- monophyletic group, since the raccoon dog was classified in the relationship of the foxes of the genus Vulpes . Were compared while about 15 kilobases of exon - and intron - sequences .

According to this investigation, the two types of gray foxes ( Urocyon ) form their own branch called the gray fox clade, which is compared to all other dogs as the most original group today. The branch with the remaining species, which have so far been referred to as real foxes, also contains the raccoon dog ( Nyctereutes procyonoides ) and is known as the red fox clade. The remaining types of dogs, originally fully assigned to real dogs, are currently divided into two clades - the South American clade with the genera Atelocynus , Cerdocyon , Lycalopex , Chrysocyon and Speothos as well as the wolf clade with the genera Canis , Cuon and lycaon .
