River delta in the coastal plain of the North Slope

The Canning River is an approximately 200 km long tributary of the Beaufort Sea in the North Slope in northern Alaska .

Its headwaters are in the Franklin Mountains , a mountain range of the Brooks range . The Canning River flows into the Camden Bay of the Beaufort Sea in a river delta in the coastal plain of the North Slope .

The upper reaches of the Canning River runs west for about 25 km and then turns north. The middle and lower reaches form the western border of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge .

The river was part of the Arctic Refuge oil drilling controversy .

The river was named in 1826 after George Canning , a British politician. The original name of the Eskimos was Kogruak , which means something like "old river".

The area on the lower reaches of the Canning River was intensively explored from 1906 to 1914 by geologist Ernest de Koven Leffingwell (1875–1971).
