Canon RF bayonet

The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 MACRO IS STM

The Canon RF bayonet is a lens bayonet connection for Canon 35mm system cameras of the EOS R digital camera system . The information between the camera and lens is only transmitted digitally.

Lenses with an EF or EF-S bayonet can be connected to an EOS-R camera using an adapter; the reverse is not possible due to the smaller flange focus . The EOS-M bayonet introduced by Canon in 2012 is incompatible with the RF bayonet in both directions.

RF bayonet

introduction

The RF bayonet has been around since September 2018, when it was presented with the first Canon EOS R camera, the EOS R , at the photokina in Cologne, together with four lenses:

  • RF 24-105mm f / 4L IS USM
  • RF 28-70mm f / 2L USM
  • RF 35 mm f / 1.8 MACRO IS STM
  • RF 50mm f / 1.2L USM

construction

The RF bayonet is a further development of the EF bayonet. It has more electrical contacts and a shorter flange focal length. However, EF lenses can be connected to EOS-R cameras with a passive adapter that compensates for the distance and loops through the contacts. The RF bayonet has a flange focal length of 20 mm and a diameter of 54 mm, while the EF bayonet has a flange focal length of 44 mm and a diameter of 54 mm.

service

On the top of the camera, the RF bayonet has a red line; this must be opposite the red line on the lens when it is attached. Then the entire lens is rotated clockwise until it clicks into place. A button on the housing is pressed to unlock.

Some RF lenses can only be dimmed electrically, i.e. only if the electrical contacts are connected to those of the camera. This means that either an adapter is required if the lens is operated in the retro position , or the lens must be removed from the camera while the dimmer button (not available on all EOS cameras) is held down. Then the lens remains dimmed when it is removed.

All RF lenses can also be focused manually with an adjustment ring. The autofocus mode is switched with a slide switch on the lens. With conventional RF lenses, the setting ring is mechanically decoupled when it is set to manual focus and can be moved freely. Lenses with full-time manual focus can also be focused manually when they are switched to autofocus. This allows corrective action to be taken after the camera has focused.

Data transfer

The data is transmitted digitally between the camera and the lens using a serial protocol. Canon has not published the pin assignment or the data transfer protocol used . For third-party lens manufacturers, this represents a hurdle that can only be overcome by reverse engineering .

Cameras

Currently (July 2020) there are five Canon cameras with RF bayonets, all with full-frame sensors :

In February 2019, the Korean lens manufacturer Samyang Optics was the first to announce two of its own lenses for the RF mount. These are operated completely manually and do not transfer any data, nor do they have any contacts for it.
