Lock in Canow

Canow is part of the municipality of Wustrow in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany).

Canow is located on the southern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District between Labussee and Canower See and has 160 inhabitants. Canow is known as a resort and through the lock. The Labus and Canower lakes are connected here by a short section of canal that belongs to the Müritz-Havel waterway .

In Canow there was a summer residence of the Strelitz dukes in the 1740s , which Prince Friedrich - who later became King of Prussia - visited and told his father about. This house is often referred to in the literature as a hunting lodge. Its location on the Canower See, from where a further view over the water was possible, can still be recognized by the existing tree-lined hill.

The building (warehouse) near the lock system belonging to the former watermill, which was mentioned in a document since 1359 and is very distinctive for the small town, was demolished in 2005/2006.

Canow became a popular holiday destination thanks to the numerous holiday apartments and bungalow settlements that were built in the village between 1960 and 1990. The influx of people looking for relaxation was increased during this time by the existence of campsites at almost all the lakes in the area. The proximity to Rheinsberg and the convenient traffic connection to the larger Neustrelitz favored this development and suggest that the place will continue to exist as a popular travel destination.

At the exit of the Canow lock on the Labussee side is the Canow fishery, which is part of the Obere Havel lake fishery ( Wesenberg ).

About a kilometer away is the small village of Neu Canow , which includes a cottage settlement with around 100 holiday apartments.
