The Canower See is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District 11 kilometers southeast of Mirow and 10 kilometers south of Wesenberg in the south of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , on the border with Brandenburg ; this runs on the south bank of the lake.
The water area is located entirely in the municipal area of Wustrow . The district of Canow , which lies on the north-western bank, is the namesake of the water. The lake is about 1800 meters long and up to 800 meters wide. It is divided into a pronounced western basin with a longer bay to the southwest and a narrower elongated eastern half.
The lake has tributaries in the north-west through the Canow lock and weir section from the Labussee and in the south-west from the Narchowsee. To the east it merges into the Kleiner and Großer Pälitzsee .
The Canower See is part of the 32-kilometer federal waterway Müritz-Havel waterway of waterway class I; The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .
In the 1740s, the Canower See was a summer residence of the Strelitz dukes , which Prince Friedrich - who later became King of Prussia - visited. This house is often referred to in the literature as a hunting lodge. From the house there was a great view over the water. The location can still be recognized by the existing tree-lined hill.
