Note: This article places the family name before the person's first name. This is the usual order in Chinese. Cao is the family name here, Wenxuan is the first name.

Cao Wenxuan ( Chinese  曹文軒 , Pinyin Cáo Wénxuān ; born in January 1954 in Yancheng , Jiangsu ) is a Chinese novelist best known for his children's books. Cao is the vice president of the Beijing Authors Association. He is also a professor and graduate tutor at Beijing University . His novels have been translated into English , Dutch , French German , Italian , Japanese and Korean .

biography

Cao graduated from Peking University's Faculty of Chinese Language and Literature in 1974 and began publishing novels in 1983. He lives in Beijing.

Cao's 2012 Dingding Dangdang book series follows the lives of two brothers with Down syndrome who live in a small rural Chinese village. This book series was voted one of IBBY's Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities 2015. In the book Street Lantern No. 8, it is told from their point of view what is happening in the Froschgrünen Kachelgasse where it is located. There the protagonists of the book - an old man, a shaggy dog ​​and a lady with an umbrella - meet again and again to rest or to talk.

Hans Christian Andersen Prize

In April 2016 it was announced that Cao was the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Prize for Children's Book Authors. The IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People), which awarded the award, said that Cao “writes wonderfully about the complex lives of children who face great challenges. He is a committed writer whose own difficult childhood had a major impact on his writing, in which there are no easy answers. ”He received the award on August 20, 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand. His speech at the award ceremony was entitled "Literature: Another Form of House Building" 《文学 : 另 一种 造 屋》.
