Cape Brett is a cape in the Far North District of the Northland regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

Cape Brett was named after the British admiral Sir Peircy Brett by the British navigator and explorer, Captain James Cook , on his first South Seas voyage (1768–1771) .

geography

Cape Brett is located on the northern tip of the Cape Brett Peninsula , around 22 km northeast of Russell and at the eastern end of the Bay of Islands , which is closed off by the Cape there. The cape consists of a ridge that drops from a height of 203  m to the steep slopes of the coast.

Directly in front of the cape is the island of Otuwhanga Island , which is only separated from the mainland by an 8 m wide strait and around 565 m northeast of the neighboring island of Motukokako Island is within sight, which is known for " The Hole in the Rock " ( The Hole in the Rock ) is known among tourists.

Cape Brett Lighthouse

In 1910, the Cape Brett Lighthouse was built by the Department of Transport on the Cape Brett ridge . The lighthouse went into operation on February 21, 1910 and was the first in New Zealand whose optics were floating on mercury . The tower has not been in operation since 1978; its task was taken over by a nearby automatic beacon. The technology at the time of its decommissioning is almost in a working condition.

tourism

The lighthouse as well as the lighthouse keeper's house can be visited on guided tours organized by the Department of Conservation . The 16.3 km long Cape Brett Track leads from Rāwhiti over the ridge of the Cape Brett Peninsula directly to Cape Brett and its lighthouse.

From Paihia and Russell there are daily boat trips to Cape Brett and the offshore islands.
