Capelaw Hill

The Capelaw Hill is a hill in the Pentland Hills . The 454 m high elevation is at the northern end of the approximately 25 km long range of hills on the eastern border of the Scottish Council Area Edinburgh . The closest settlements are around four kilometers to the west of Currie and the southern districts of Edinburgh three kilometers to the north. The closest hills are Harbor Hill in the southwest, Allermuir Hill in the northeast and Castlelaw Hill in the southeast.

The Bonaly Reservoir was dammed on the western flank of the Capelaw Hills . The reservoir was completed in 1853 and serves to supply Edinburgh with water. The Kirk Burn rises on the south-eastern flank of the hill and flows into the Glencorse Reservoir to the south .

Surroundings

A military training area extends over parts of the Capelaw Hills. This stretches in a three-kilometer strip west of the A720 . Originally, units stationed in the Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik used the area. Today the facility is partially abandoned and is part of the Redford Barracks in Edinburgh . If there is no military operation, the facility can be entered.

Traces of earlier settlement can be found on the southern flank in particular. In addition to leveling for at least ten buildings, which were arranged in two rows about 40 m apart, traces of associated agricultural use can also be seen. Traces of a hut can be found on the north flank.
