The Castlelaw Hill is a hill in the Pentland Hills . The 488 m high elevation is at the northern end of the approximately 25 km long range of hills on the western border of the Scottish Council Area Midlothian . The closest settlements are around four kilometers away, Penicuik in the south and Roslin in the east. The neighboring hills are Woodhouselee Hill in the east, Turnhouse Hill in the south, Bell's Hill in the southwest, Harbor Hill and Capelaw Hill in the northwest and Allermuir Hill in the north. The crest marks a modern cairn . The Kirk Burn flows along the west flank and flows into the Glencorse Reservoir dammed up to the south .
Surroundings
There are numerous traces of previous settlement on Castlelaw Hill. The Castlelaw Hill Fort on the southeast flank should be highlighted . The hill fort with several walls and partly preserved building structures dates from the late Iron Age . From the late period of use around the 1st to 2nd century AD, there is an earth house around 20 m wide . The facility is classified as a Scheduled Monument . On the southern flank of Castlelaw Hill there is a ring-shaped trench up to 2.5 m further. This structure suggests a former early round hut with a diameter of about twelve meters. This complex is also protected as a Scheduled Monument.
The ring trench is in the area of a military firing range on the south side of the Castlelaw Hills. The system extends in a three-kilometer strip west of the A720 . Originally, units stationed in the Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik used the area. Today the facility is partially abandoned and is part of the Redford Barracks in Edinburgh . If there is no military operation, the facility can be entered.
