Capitola is a US city in Santa Cruz County in the US state of California . It has about 9,700 inhabitants (as of 2004) on an area of 4.4 km².
history
Capitola was created on the site of a former Indian village. The original inhabitants, known as Soquel Indians , were relocated to the newly established Mission in Santa Cruz in 1791 . During the Mexican- controlled era , the area became part of a married couple's Soquel Rancho .
Shortly after California became a state and Santa Cruz County in 1850, the German immigrant Frederick Hihn acquired what is now the Capitola. The local beach gained importance for shipping as Soquel Landing and in 1857 a wharf was built.
Already towards the end of the 19th century it was recognized that the place could also be interesting for tourists. The "Camp Capitola" was opened in 1874 as a travel destination and overnight accommodation. Passenger trains that ran on the railway from Santa Cruz to Watsonville from 1876 onwards favored the development of this facility. A few years later, "Capitol by the Sea" was a seaside resort with a 160-bed hotel and direct transport links to Santa Cruz. The place was officially registered as a city in 1949
