Carlsbad is a city in San Diego County in the US state of California , with a population of 105,328 (as of the 2010 census ). The urban area has a size of 105.6 square kilometers.

history

In 1882 John Frazier discovered a mineral spring while digging a well in 126.5 m; Later it was discovered that the water is chemically similar to the water of Karlsbad in Bohemia and the place was renamed Carlsbad in 1889 (formerly Agua Hedionda ).

Frazier and other business people founded the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company. In the 1930s Carlsbad was popular as a health resort with actors and other celebrities, but then the Great Depression hit the US hard and the spring was forgotten for 60 years; It was not until 1993 that Ludvik Grigoras, who was born in Karlovy Vary, repaired the old well and drilled another. In 1994 he had a 4 m high statue of John Frazier made and shipped from Europe to Carlsbad. The famous medicinal water is now bottled and sold as Carlsbad Alkaline Water. The spring is still in the city today and you can taste water from a fountain there. Today the place is also popular as a water sports location .

In a few years the city is expected to merge with Oceanside .

Interstate 5 runs through Carlsbad .

In Carlsbad there is a Legoland park from the Danish toy company Lego , which also houses the first SeaLife center, which was built in North America. Carlsbad is also home to a small water theme park.

Since 1986, the Carlsbad 5000 road race with over 10,000 runners has been held annually in January in Carlsbad . An annual summer concert festival has also been held in the three public parks since 1986. On three days in September, the Carllsbad Music Festival also brings together artists and composers from all musical genres. Twice a year, more than 100,000 visitors also come to the Carlsbad Village Faire, the largest street festival in the USA.
