history

In 1882, the California Southern Railroad built a railroad line from Lake Elsinore to Perris on the east side of the San Jacinto River . The Santa Fe Railroad later bought the route and connected it to their own in San Bernardino . After floods in 1884, 1916 and 1927, the Santa Fe Railroad decided to abandon the route. Shortly after the last flood, the Temescal Water Company bought the railway line and 4 km² of land from a farmer named Henry Evans. These two purchased areas make up the main part of the City of Canyon Lake today. In 1927, construction began on the Canyon Lake reservoir with the dam; the entire system was completed in 1929. After the flooding, the lake was one of the largest fishing, hunting, and camping lakes in Southern California . From 1937 until World War II , Canyon Lake, along with the surrounding land, was rented to George D. Evans and his family as a recreational area. After the war, Ray and Alpha Shekel, along with John and Krediten Kirkland, operated the recreation area until 1949 when the reservoir had to be drained to repair the locks. In 1953 the facility was reopened and operated by Elinor and Donald Martin until 1968.

From 1968 Canyon Lake was developed as a planned city by the Corona Land Company. On December 1, 1990, the city was officially named a city and has been an independent city since then, but at the same time a closed residential complex .

In the media

In 2006 Canyon Lake was the focus of the BBC documentary United Gates of America . The journalist Charlie LeDuff lived in town for a month for the production to find out why the residents retreat to a closed living area and what effect it has on them. In addition, LeDuff addressed the problems of immigration from Mexico and Central America as well as segregation and racism in the United States . The film sparked controversy in Canyon Lake, but received positive reviews in both the United States and the United Kingdom , the country of production .

In 2012, a local resident published Images of Canyon Lake , which featured photography of Canyon Lake scenery, wildlife, and events.
