Capsicum eximium is only found in the wild plants art of the genus peppers ( Capsicum ) from the family of the Solanaceae family . The species was first described in 1950, its range is in the south of Bolivia and in the north of Argentina .

description

Capsicum eximium is an upright, richly branched shrub that usually reaches a height of 1.6 m, but can also grow as a tree up to 4 m high . The foliage leaves , flower stalks, and parts of the outside of the calyx are moderately covered with multicellular trichomes . The leaf blades are usually ovate-pointed, 2.5 to 5.2 cm long and 1.6 to 3 cm wide, from time to time also ovate-lanceolate and 4.3 to 8 cm long and 1.6 to 3.3 cm wide. The leaf blades run down 1/4 to 1/5 of the length of the petioles.

The flowers are solitary or in pairs, only rarely in threes, on thin flower stalks with a length of 10 to 15 mm, which are occasionally slightly curved at the tip. The calyx tube is 1.5 to 1.8 mm long, the main veins of the five individual sepals end in calyx teeth with a length of 1.2 to 1.8 mm, so that they can reach the corolla tube and also protrude. In addition, each sepal has two to three secondary veins that are barely visible and disappear towards the edge of the calyx. The star-shaped crown is purple on the edge, whitish in the tube and greenish in color at the base, has a diameter of 9 to 11 mm and a length of 5.3 to 5.5 mm. The corolla lobes are wider than long, usually about 2.8 mm long and 3 mm wide, more or less elongated compared to the corolla tube and covered with trichomes at the edge and at the tip. The stamens start at about half to two thirds of the length of the corolla tube. The lightly horned anthers are yellow, 1.7 to 1.9 mm long and longer than the stamens . The greenish ovary is about 1.2 mm high, the cylindrical pen has above the center of a slight extension and is including scar mm long. 3

The red fruits stand upright on stems about 15 to 20 mm long and have a diameter of 7 to 9 mm. The seeds are brownish. The base chromosome number is .

Occurrence

The species is known from a few collections from southern Bolivia and northern Argentina .

Systematics

Investigations of the karyotype showed strong similarities with the species Capsicum cardenasii , Capsicum pubescens and Capsicum tovarii . These species are also morphologically similar, all of which bloom violet, have brownish seeds and (except for C. pubescens ) have small, red, spherical fruits. In addition to Capsicum tovarii , crossings with these species resulted in fertile offspring. The white-flowered species Capsicum baccatum and Capsicum frutescens were also successfully crossed.
