Carena Schlewitt

Carena Schlewitt (* 1961 in Leipzig ) is a German theater scholar . Since 2018 she has been the director of the European Center for the Arts Hellerau . In addition to accompanying and developing the independent theater scene in Germany and Switzerland, her focus is on the theater's discussions with the transformation processes in East Germany and the like. Eastern Europe, the development of international performance theater and the relationship between theater and public space.

Career

Schlewitt grew up in Bad Lausick in Saxony and in 1980 went to the Humboldt University of Berlin to study theater studies . She then worked from 1985 to 1993 as a research assistant in the performing arts department at the Academy of Arts in East Berlin , at a time when social changes in Eastern Europe also affected theater work in the GDR.

Carena Schlewitt worked at the Podewil production facility in Berlin until 1999, where, among other things, she co-founded the independent scene festival " rich & famous " in 1996 . During this time she also worked for the Theater der Welt festival , which took place in Berlin in 1999. From 1999 to 2003 she worked as a dramaturge and deputy artistic director at the Forum Free Theater in Düsseldorf, where she a. a. curated the project "city mapping" for the Festival Theater der Welt 2002 in Düsseldorf, followed by the position as theater curator and deputy artistic director at the Theater Hebbel am Ufer in Berlin until 2008. There she was essential in the development of the 100 Grad Berlin Festival for involved the independent scene and curated several international festivals, including a. 2007 the festival "Detour via China".

In 2008 she went to Basel Kaserne as director for ten years , a cultural center for the independent theater , dance and performance scene , which she saved from the threat of closure. From 2012 to 2018 she also directed the international theater festival in Basel, which was revived after a four-year break.

Since the 2018/2019 season she has been contracted as artistic director of the European Center for the Arts in Hellerau, which gave her the opportunity to return to her home region.

Schlewitt was a member of various juries, including for the “ Impulse ” festival , for the German-Polish committee of experts and the “Doppelpass” program of the Federal Cultural Foundation , for the “Swiss-Chinese Cultural Explorations” of the Pro Helvetia Foundation, for the Swiss Dance Days 2011 and for the expert commission of the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia . She is currently a member of the board of trustees of the Fonds Darstellende Künste.
