features

The rhizome of the species is creeping. The soft, supple stems are triangular and 20–40 cm high and less than 1 mm thick. The 2.5–3.5 mm wide, bare leaves of Carex munda are flat and slightly longer than the stems, the basal sheaths are light brown. Their bracts are longer than the three to seven linear-cylindrical, spiked and 1.5-2 cm large inflorescences and have long tubes. As a rule, one inflorescence arises at the base, two more in the middle, and the rest at the end of the stem, the top one can be branched. The male part of the terminal inflorescences is longer than the female. The branched spikes grow from a cover sheet with a developed female flower, with the lateral inflorescences emerging from the sheaths the male part is shorter than the female. The male husks are yellow-brown, 3–3.5 mm long, have a midrib and a pronounced tip. The female husks are yellow-brown on the sides, green in the middle and oval to elongated. They measure 2.5–3 mm, have three veins, translucent edges and a blunt or protruding tip. The membranous cover sheet is yellowish-green, erect and longer than the husks. It is elliptical, obtuse triangular and 3–4 mm long. Laterally it has two fine veins, abaxially several fine veins. Its base tapers abruptly to a short stem, the tip suddenly to a pointed beak . The mouth of the cover sheet is cut. The ripe nut is light brown, egg-shaped and triangular. It measures about 2 mm, has a short-stemmed base and a pointed end. The stylus is basal slightly thickened, the scar is in three parts. The flat rachilla , if present, measures 0.2-0.3 mm.
