CargoBeamer is a horizontal loading system from CargoBeamer AG for combined rail traffic , which enables the fully automatic transshipment process on all wagons of a train in parallel. After its invention in 1998, the system was brought to market maturity by CargoBeamer AG in 2013 by commissioning the first pilot transports. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of trains (from 2564 to 12285), the transport volume (from 26 to 152 million tkm ) and the capacity utilization of the trains (from 60 to 85 percent) were achieved.

The CargoBeamer system includes special wagons of the type Sdkmss together with the JetModule, a type of drawer in which a non-craneable semi-trailer is parked, and the CargoBeamer terminal, in which the special devices for moving the JetModules are installed on a track.

Handling process

The semi-trailers are parked by the tractor unit on the available JetModules in CargoGate, a special transshipment station. There they are uncoupled and the tractor drives away. Then a freight train - consisting of CargoJet freight cars - enters the transshipment facility. The JetModules on which the truck trailer is transported are pushed out to the side from the pocket wagons . The loaded tubs are pushed into the freight cars from the other side. The train is now ready to depart again. According to the manufacturer, the entire transfer process should take 15 minutes.

The CargoBeamer is primarily designed for the transport of semi-trailers . These make up the majority of European long-distance truck traffic. In principle, it is also possible to use it to transport swap bodies or ISO containers .

Advantages and disadvantages

advantages
  • The transshipment is relatively quick compared to a crane loading or reach stacker if all the trailers are correctly positioned in the shell.
  • The system works under electrified tracks .
  • The tractor and train do not have to be in the terminal at the same time.
  • The wagon is compatible with conventional transshipment terminals. The trolley extensions can be lifted out of the trolleys using the gantry cranes used in these terminals or with reach stackers . This means that the vast majority of trailers, which would otherwise not be craneable, can be lifted onto railroad cars using the car attachments.
  • The CargoBeamer GateModules (terminal technology) with a width of 13 m plus lanes are very efficient for the trucks and require less space than a conventional transshipment terminal with the same throughput.
  • The freight wagons are free of electrics and hydraulics and are therefore simpler and cheaper than the wagons of other horizontal handling systems.
disadvantage
  • The freight wagons are heavier than pocket wagons - this disadvantage is particularly effective on routes with steep gradients (mountain routes).
  • The freight wagons are technically more complex and more expensive than previous pocket wagons, both those for vertical handling with cranes and the wagons on the rolling road .
  • With the CargoBeamer system can no trucks are transported, only the trailers of tractor-trailers .

Admission

The wagons have been approved as TSI- compliant by the Federal Railway Authority since 2010 and can therefore be used throughout the EU.

Test run Leipzig – Hagen

CargoBeamer Terminal in Leipzig (2014)

In 2011 a test operation took place between Leipzig and Hagen . Only in Leipzig is there a CargoBeamer transshipment station, and this only has transshipment modules for three wagons. In Hagen, the semi-trailers are handled with conventional cranes.

Nonetheless, non-craneable semi-trailers can be handled as the tubs in which the semi-trailers are located can be craned.

Pilot route Rotterdam – Riga

The first commercial route is to run from Rotterdam to Riga. A special feature here is that two different gauges are used on this relation. Instead of conventional re-gauging , the cargo at the CargoBeamer can simply be reloaded between regular and broad gauge trains at the border. This route is funded by the EU with € 5,415,900 from the Marco Polo II framework program.

Planned CargoBeamer stations

Wolfsburg

On the grounds of the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg one is pilot plant was built. The official start of construction was on November 29, 2012. The plant went into operation in spring 2013 and was dismantled again at the end of 2016. The pilot operation was designed for twelve round trips to Bettembourg (Luxembourg) per week .

Hagen-Hengstey

In Hagen- Hengstey , a CargoBeamer transshipment station on the site of the former Hengstey marshalling yard , whose shunting operation was discontinued on February 1, 1976, is being planned on the banks of Lake Hengstey . This site at the intersection of the Ruhr-Sieg route , the Ruhrtalbahn , the Hagen – Hamm and the Upper Ruhrtalbahn is well connected to the road network via the nearby Hagen-Nord exit of the parallel Federal Motorway 1 . The location, however, is controversial and is a concern, especially among residents, as a local recreation area is also planned here. A plan approval procedure that has already been applied for with the Arnsberg district government has been suspended since the end of 2012.

Mockava

A CargoBeamer terminal is being built near the Lithuanian village of Mockava, as this is where the only connection between the European standard gauge network and the Russian broad-gauge railway network of the three Baltic states is located. This terminal will be used to transfer the JetModules between standard-gauge and pulp-gauge CargoBeamers. This terminal is being built jointly by the German CargoBeamer AG and the Lithuanian Achema Group and should go into operation in the second half of 2012.

Calais

A CargoBeamer terminal is to be built there as part of the expansion of the Calais ferry port. This location is ideal because there many semi-trailers are transshipped unaccompanied by means of square tractors onto ferries. While the city of Calais is supporting this transshipment station, the French rail network operator Réseau ferré de France is blocking this project by refusing to allow the rail connection.
