Caribbean Initiative is an initiative of the IUCN ( International Union for the Conservation of Nature ). It focuses on the islands of the Caribbean , which as an ecologically connected area are faced with the challenge of harmonizing the sustainable development of their resources with the protection of the environment.

origin

The IUCN holds its general assembly every four years at the World Conservation Congress , where a global four-year program for environmental protection and sustainable development is discussed and adopted. In 2004 members of the Union asked the Secretariat to increase the IUCN's presence in the Caribbean region. Then the Caribbean Initiative was formulated. The background to this was extensive consultations and an evaluation of fundamental topics, needs and opportunities in the Caribbean environment, also in the interaction of the members and partner organizations. The program was developed with the support of the French Ministère de l'Écologie et du Développement durable and the Italian Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale .

The strategy for the initiative was developed from 2009 to 2012 after the IUCN members and experts approved the program in October 2008 at the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona , Spain . On this date the initiative was officially institutionalized. The initiative offers socially and politically committed functionaries the opportunity to take part in a uniform program on various levels from local to global and to receive support in joint and participation-based actions.

Headquarters

For the beginning, the initiative was placed as IUCN Caribbean under the responsibility of the Regional Office for Mesoamerica in Costa Rica. The Caribbean Initiative is currently coordinated by Ms Deirdre P. Shurland from Trinidad and Tobago .
