Carl-Heinz Dömken (born April 13, 1929 in Hanover ; † December 12, 2011 in Göddenstedt ) was a German horse breeder, caricaturist, artist, journalist and author.

Live and act

Since his primary school days, Dömken has been enthusiastic about the writer Karl May , whose work had a decisive influence on his life. Early on, he maintained contacts with personalities from the Karl May scene such as Klara May , the writer's widow, Patty Frank and Euchar Albrecht Schmid , the managing director of Karl May Verlag .

Even as a schoolboy, Dömken drew caricatures. He sent one of his drawings to Henri Nannen , who brought him to his magazine Stern after graduating from high school . After working as a journalist and illustrator for Nannens magazine, Dömken studied German at the University of Hamburg . At the same time he took acting lessons from Willy Birgel . As a result, he completed training in acting and directing at the Academy for Music and Theater in Hanover , today's Hanover University of Music, Theater and Media . Then Dömken worked as assistant director to the artistic director Franz Reichert at the State Theater Hanover, today's Lower Saxony State Theater Hanover .

Dömken worked as a cartoonist and draftsman for his entire life. “The first Federal President, Theodor Heuss, felt that Dömken's caricature 'really worked out'; Federal Chancellors Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Schmidt had him portrayed them.” Since 1995, Dömken has designed the cover illustrations for the widespread volumes of Karl May's novels in the Karl-May in Bamberg -Publishing company.

Dömken also dealt with Karl May as an author. He summarized all the passages in his work about Kara Ben Nemsi's legendary stallion Rih in a book into his own biography of the horse. In addition, Dömken published numerous works on horses.

He founded and ran a stud in the Lüneburg Heath until his death , where he bred Arabian horses and dogs of the Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées breed.

His friends and acquaintances included Marika Rökk , Hans Albers , Heinz Rühmann and Heinz Erhardt , who, according to Dömken, "had no sense of humor."
