Chuck Berg

Charles Merrell "Chuck" Berg (* 1940 or 1941 ; † July 26, 2016 in Lawrenze , Kansas ) was an American film scholar, author and jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , flute ). He was a professor at the University of Kansas .

Live and act

Berg had been a professor of film and media studies in the Department of Theater and Film at the University of Kansas since 1977 . His main research interests were American film and popular culture. He authored An Investigation of the Motives for and Realization of Music to Accompany the American Silent Film (1976). Most recently his work The Encyclopedia of Orson Welles (2003) appeared. He also served as advisor to the editors of the Journal of Film and Video and as editor of the Journal of Dramatic Art and Criticism and the Journal of Popular Music and Society .

Berg was a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), which hosts the Grammy Awards , and was responsible for film and video in the International Association of Jazz Educators . He wrote as a jazz critic for JazzTimes , Down Beat , Jazz Educators Journal, American Music, Coda, Kansas City Star, and Topeka Capital-Journal. He also wrote a number of liner notes for the albums of jazz greats such as Coleman Hawkins , Jay McShann , Claude Williams , Eric Dolphy , Art Pepper , Marian McPartland , Keith Jarrett (The Impulse Years 1973–1974) , Dave Liebman , Fred Hersch , Joanne Brackeen , Mary Lou Williams and Lee Ritenour . I.a. with Dave Liebman and Richie Beirach , he co-wrote the book Lookout Farm: A Case Study of Improvisation for Small Jazz Group . He has also contributed to The Oxford Companion to Jazz, The Gramophone Guide to CD Jazz and the All Music Guide to Jazz .

He also worked as a musician in his hometown and also directed his own ensemble (Chuck Berg and Friends) ; he stepped u. a. with Roy Eldridge and Maynard Ferguson . In 1988 he worked on the album Blame It on the Music by Sherry Jones.

Berg died on July 26, 2016 at the age of 75 in Lawrence, Kansas.
