biography

Carl Ruge was the son of the Berlin doctor Ludwig Magnus Wilhelm Ruge (1812 or 1814–1897). His mother Marie Luise Karoline Philippine Mayer (1825–1908) was a daughter of the Berlin gynecologist Karl Wilhelm Mayer . Her sister Ferdinande Amalie Rosalie (1832–1913) married the doctor Rudolf Virchow in 1850 .

After studying medicine, in 1871, on the recommendation of his uncle Rudolf Virchow, in addition to his work as a practicing doctor and obstetrician, he became head of the laboratory for microscopic and clinical examinations at the Charité 's women's clinic . He was also an employee of Karl Schroeder for a long time . From 1882 to 1912 he then headed the pathological institute created for gynecology at the university gynecological clinic in Berlin's Artilleriestraße . In 1896 he was appointed professor.

Ruge edited the microscopic diagnostic sections in the well-known textbook on gynecological diagnostics . Partly in collaboration with the young gynecologist Johann Veit , he worked out the basics of gynecological histopathology, particularly in microscopic diagnostics for the early diagnosis of uterine cancer . Together with Veit, he is considered to be the first to describe cervical cancer and, with Veit, introduced conization in 1878 . Among other things, Ruge was a member of the German Central Committee for Research and Combating Cancer Disease e. V.
