Carl Christian Wilhelm Sartorius (born August 31, 1796 in Gundernhausen near Darmstadt ; † January 16, 1872 at the Hacienda del Mirador near Huatusco , Veracruz state , Mexico ) was a German theologian, educator and writer.

Life

His parents were the pastor Johann Philipp Christoph Sartorius (1756-1810) and his wife Christina Carolina Felicitas Götz (1769-1837).

Sartorius attended grammar school in Darmstadt and studied philology and theology at the University of Giessen from 1813 . He was the main founder of the Germanic Association , belonged to the Teutsche Reading Society (1815) and the Ehrenspiegel fraternity and was a Gießener Schwarzer , an early form of the Gießen fraternity . After successfully completing his studies in 1819, he worked as a teacher at the grammar school in Wetzlar .

Sartorius had already attracted attention during his studies because of his liberal political stance. He was arrested during the demagogue persecution that same year. In 1824 he emigrated to Mexico, where he first earned his living on a farm and then as manager of a silver mine. During this time he also began writing. In 1830 he married Wilhelmine Stein († November 14, 1852 in Darmstadt) from Darmstadt, whose brother also worked in nearby silver mines. In 1839 he founded a hacienda where he grew sugar cane on a large scale .

In 1849 Sartorius came to Germany for three years and lived in Darmstadt during this time. With his lectures he was soon a sought-after speaker in geographical societies in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt. In his lectures, Sartorius talked about Mexico and brought the audience closer to the country and its people. Sartorius also published these lectures, summarized and elaborated. In the summer of 1852 he left Germany again and went back to Mexico forever.

The surgeon Wilhelm Müller was his grandson.
