Carl Dahl (painter, 1812)
Niels Carl Michael Flindt Dahl (born March 24, 1812 in Fåborg , † April 7, 1865 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish marine painter of the Golden Age .
Life
Carl Dahl was born in Fåborg in 1812 as the son of the customs inspector and councilor Arendt Michaelsen Dahl and his wife Anna Cathrine Elisabeth Michelsdatter-Lund. From 1830 Dahl did an apprenticeship as a painter on Langeland. From 1835 he began his studies at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen, first in the plaster class, then with Jens Peter Møller and later with GF Hetsch in perspective . The conclusion was the marine painting with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg .
Dahl was a drawing teacher at the Cadet Academy from 1840 to 1852, in this role he made a sea voyage with the corvette Flora to Lisbon in 1840 . He was also with the Navy from 1848 to 1850 at the Schleswig-Holstein survey ; the Three Years War (Danish: Treårskrig). The fleet maneuvers and battles gave him the opportunity to show his skill in choosing positions and perspectives in his pictures. From October 1842 to October 1848 he was also a teacher at the Perspective School of the Copenhagen Art Academy. In the German-Danish War he was again in the navy in the naval battle of May 9, 1864 off Heligoland. His depiction of the skirmish "Slaget ved Helgoland May 9, 1864" was later chosen by other artists as a template for lithographs .
In 1849 Dahl received the Neuhausensche Premium for his work “Skibe der passerer Kronborg” . He used this bonus and a two-year travel grant from the Academy in 1851/52 for study trips to Italy and France in 1852 and 1855, to Norway in 1861 and in 1862 to London and the Faroe Islands .
Dahl was mainly a marine painter, but his oeuvre also contains landscapes and individual genre paintings. Dahl had been married to Pauline Birgitte Weber (1815–1850) since October 1844, and the couple had a daughter. Dahl died in Frederiksberg in 1865, he was buried on the Copenhagen Holmens Kirkegaard.
