Carl Ferdinand Adam

Carl Ferdinand Adam (also: Karl Ferdinand Adam; * December 22, 1806 in Constappel , today the municipality of Klipphausen , Saxony ; † December 23, 1868 in Leisnig , Kingdom of Saxony ) was a German music teacher, cantor, choir director and composer.

Life

Carl Ferdinand Adam was the son of a teacher and organist. He was brought up at Schleinitz Castle together with the only son of Chamberlain von Zehmen . At the age of twelve he attended the Kreuzschule in Dresden. Here he received singing and piano lessons from Heinrich Marschner, among others . He then studied at the University of Leipzig jurisprudence . He dropped out of law school to study music. Christian Theodor Weinlig was one of his teachers. After completing his music studies, he first settled in Dresden as a music teacher. On July 2, 1834 Adam was elected director of the recently founded Dresden male choir Orpheus . In 1842 he founded the Dresdner Liederkranz with Julius Otto . From 1844 he was cantor and music director in Leisnig. Here he founded the Liederkranz men's choir on January 13, 1845 , which he directed for nine years.

Works (selection)

Carl Ferdinand Adam wrote many pieces for male choir. His best-known and still popular work today is the evening song: evening will again be for a five-part male choir. In addition, he wrote songs, piano pieces and variations, but also cantatas and small oratorios.

Song of the robbers: Jung Volker, this is our robber captain ; IV The boy mountain member: I am the shepherd boy from the mountain V Spring belief: The gentle air has awakened ; VI Abendlied: It will be evening again .   • Poems by a living man for male choir or quartet singing op. 6. I Rheinweinlied: Where such a fire still flourishes ; II Call: tear the crosses out of the earth ; III Reiterlied: The anxious night is now over ; IV Song of the young at the amnesty of the old: Like the thunder of waves from the distant sea ; V The Last War: Who Can Fold His Hands . Commemoration

Monument to Carl Ferdinand Adams in Leisnig

In Constappel, a memorial plaque was attached to the schoolhouse, where Adam was born. In 1909 a memorial was erected in Leisnig. There is also a memorial plaque on Adam's house at Kirchplatz 4 in Leisnig.
