Carl Ferdinand Laeisz

Carl Ferdinand Laeisz (born August 10, 1853 in Hamburg ; † August 22, 1900 ) was a Hamburg shipowner , marine insurer and member of the Hamburg Parliament.

Laeisz was born as the son of the shipowner Carl Heinrich Laeisz and Sophie Christine Knöhr (1831–1912) in Hamburg, where he grew up and completed a commercial apprenticeship, which he completed in London. After a two-year trip around the world, at the beginning of 1879 he joined the shipping company F. Laeisz, run by his grandfather Ferdinand Laeisz and his father, as a partner. In addition to the shipping business, Laeisz also devoted himself to the marine insurance business. In addition, Laeisz also participated in other ventures, so in 1881 he became director of the steamship shipping company "Hansa", which took up liner services with steamers to Philadelphia and Baltimore . After a few years he switched to the supervisory board until the shipping company was sold to Hapag in 1892 .

From 1884 until his death, Laeisz was a member of the board of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and served as its president from 1895 to 1898. Laeisz was a co-founder of the See-Berufsgenossenschaft in 1887 , especially the accident prevention regulations and the regulations for surviving dependents are attributed to him.

From 1892 to 1900 Laeisz belonged to the Hamburg citizenship .

Laeisz was a member of the fleet association and the Hamburg department of the German Colonial Society . He was a member of several supervisory boards, that of the German steamship company Kosmos , the German-Australian steamship company and that of the North German Bank .

Carl Ferdinand Laeisz died at the age of 47 after a serious illness in 1900 before his father. He left two sons, Herbert Ferdinand (1886-1918) and Erich Ferdinand Laeisz (December 25, 1888 to January 18, 1958), who were raised by their grandmother Sophie Ch. Laeisz. Erich F. Laeisz was the last male descendant and successor of Ferdinand Laeisz after the death of his brother during the First World War .
