The Carl Fr. Gauss was a survey ship of the sea hydrographic service of the GDR .
history
The ship was built in 1974/75 as Project 136 at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast based on a modified design of the Condor II class and put into service on April 30, 1976. It was used for surveying tasks in the Baltic Sea and was stationed in Warnemünde .
After the German reunification , the ship came to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency . It was decommissioned at the end of 1994 and replaced by Deneb .
Technical data and equipment
The ship was powered by two diesel engines of the type D40, each with 1,837 kW power driven. The engines worked on two controllable pitch propellers . The ship reached a speed of up to 19 knots .
Five diesel generators with a total of 375 kVA apparent power were available for the power supply on board .
For use as a survey ship, there were several echo sounders and position determination systems as well as other measuring devices on board. The ship was equipped with two dinghies . There was also a rubber dinghy on board.
Whereabouts of the ship
The ship was sold after decommissioning and converted to the yacht Giusy Blue in 1999 . The range of the yacht, which has space for eight crew members and thirteen passengers and whose cruising speed is given as 15 knots, is around 4000 nautical miles . Three generators with an output of 110 kW each are available for the power supply.
