Carl Gewis (born December 20, 1865 in Constantinople ; † October 2, 1932 ) was a manufacturer in Gablonz . He was the founder of the Gablonzer company celluloid and metal goods factories Carl Gewis .

Live and act

Around 1890 Carl Gewis set up a workshop for black jewelery bijouterie (cemented jewelery) in Gablonz (Sudetenland ). Around 1900 he began to take up the new plastic celluloid in the Gablonz jewelry industry. Since the spatial conditions of the rapidly developing company were insufficient, a factory was built on the outskirts of the city in 1906. After the completion of the extension building started in 1914 above the old factory, the company was the largest company in the Gablonz plastic goods production.

After his death, the company was continued by his sons Josef and Max until 1946.

Company products

The company produced products made of celluloid and later also synthetic horn , synthetic resin and polystyrene :

  • Hat and dress decorations
  • Combs, toothbrushes, toiletries
  • Products for export to Africa and India
  • technical articles

The company, which was continued in Czech hands after the expropriation in 1946, produced, among other things, model railways in 00 gauge under the brand name Gewis , which were based on the Trix Express system. There was an electric locomotive and a railcar, both with plastic housings. Chassis parts were used that were based on molds from the Trix Express prewar production.
