The men's 200-meter run at the 1995 World Athletics Championships was held on August 10 and 11, 1995 in Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium .

In this competition, the US sprinters won two medals, gold and bronze. It was won by the 1991 world champion Michael Johnson , who was world champion over 400 meters in 1993 and won Olympic gold in his country's 4 x 400 meter relay in 1992 and World Cup gold in 1993. Here in Gothenburg, too, Michael Johnson had won over 400 meters two days earlier and was world champion over 4 × 400 meters on the final day. Second place went to the Namibian defending champion, vice world champion in 1991 and two-time Olympic runner-up in 1992 ( 100 meters / 200 meters), Frank Fredericks . Bronze went to Jeff Williams .

Record improvement

The US world champion Michael Johnson improved the existing world championship record in the final on August 11th by six hundredths of a second to 19.79 s despite a headwind of 0.5 m / s.

Michael Johnson missed the world record by just seven hundredths of a second.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was carried out in nine runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the five fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
