Carl (Andreas) Glaser (born June 27, 1841 in Kirchheimbolanden , † July 25, 1935 in Heidelberg ) was a German chemist.

From 1856 to 1859 he studied engineering at the polytechnic schools in Nuremberg and Munich, in 1863 chemistry with Justus von Liebig in Erlangen and in 1864 with Adolph Strecker in Tübingen, where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He initially became August Kekulé's assistant in Ghent and followed him to Bonn in 1868, where he completed his habilitation in 1869. This year he discovered the Glaser coupling .

He started at BASF in Ludwigshafen in 1869 and set up a branch for paint production in Russia in 1877/1878. In 1879 he became deputy director at BASF, in 1883 director and in 1895 a member of the supervisory board. From 1912 to 1920 he was chairman of the supervisory board.

In 1869 he constructed an incinerator open on both sides for organic elemental analysis. While making alizarin , he discovered carbazole and phenanthrene .

Glaser was married to Anna Doflein (1843–83), his second marriage to Elisabeth Kern (1857–1941). The grave at the main cemetery in Mannheim is a three-part wall grave in yellow sandstone with black granite writing plate. The family coat of arms is made of galvanized bronze , the central risalit is framed by three-quarter columns, and five-pointed stars are placed above the cornice. Below you can see a laurel ribbon.

Honors

In 1894 he was appointed Commerzienrath. Glaser was a Privy Councilor and Dr.-Ing. E. h. From 1859 he was a member of the Corps Rheno-Palatia Munich . Honorary citizen of Kirchheimbolanden.
