Carl Gutknecht (born May 20, 1878 in Basel ; † February 5, 1970 there ) was a Swiss sculptor .

life and work

Carl Gutknecht was the son of a sculptor from Alsace . With his father he received an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor, stone mason and plasterer . At the same time he studied with Albert Wagen at the trade school in Basel. From 1898 he continued his education at the Ecole des Arts Industriels in Geneva and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . He let it be stylistically influenced by the work of Aristide Maillol . From 1900 he lived in Basel again. After 1930 he went on long study trips that took him to Paris, Florence and Naples .

Gutknecht's works include fountain sculptures, grave monuments, reliefs, portraits and small sculptures, which can mainly be seen in the Basel area. Most of his works were commissioned by the state and were made of plaster of paris, clay, stone, cement and bronze. Some of his works came out as winners in the competitions of the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt .

He developed "a personal expression in classically balanced proportions and sequences of movements, with calm, preferably rounded, cubic forms dominating."

Gutknecht was married to Antoinette Kernberger (1904–1973).
