Carl Adolph Helsted (born January 4, 1818 in Copenhagen ; † June 7, 1904 there ) was a Danish flautist , composer and singing teacher .

Life

Carl Helsted was the son of a musician, trained as a flautist and from 1837 played as a soloist with the Royal Copenhagen Chapel . In 1840 he went on a trip abroad a. a. to Leipzig , where he made the acquaintance of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann . Since he also had a good tenor voice, he then took singing lessons from Manuel García in Paris and after his return to Denmark he developed into one of the most important singing teachers of his time. He worked at the Royal Danish Theater and in 1884 received a professorship at the Royal Danish Conservatory , of which he became a board member in 1890. Jens Nyrop , Nina Grieg , Augusta Lütken and Anna Levinsohn were among his students .

Carl Helsted's brother, Edvard Helsted (1816–1900), was a violinist and composer, his son Gustav Helsted (1857–1924) worked as an organist and composer.

Carl Helsted was active as a composer in his younger years and created orchestral music, including 2 symphonies (D major, 1842; F major, 1844) as well as chamber music, songs and choral works. In 1841 he submitted an overture in D minor to a composition competition of the Copenhagen Music Association . First prize went to Ossian's overture Nachklänge by his friend Niels Wilhelm Gade , and Helsted's work received an honorable mention. The impression that Gade was not up to date in this area may have contributed to the fact that Helsted hardly composed any more after 1850.
