Life

Carl Helvig, born and raised in Tübingen, learned drawing and lithography from his father. At the age of fifteen, in 1845, he went to Stuttgart, where he continued learning and then worked as a lithographer. He also made portrait drawings. From 1855 he also worked as a photographer in Stuttgart. It is not known from whom he acquired this knowledge. He then moved his activity to Tübingen. In 1860 he was registered as a painter and photographer in Tübingen. The order situation was not good. In 1860 Helvig applied to the Tübingen municipal council to be allowed to marry Amalie Straub, daughter of the estate manager in Stuttgart. In this application he had an annual income for several years in the rather modest amount of 450 guildersto. During the same year, 1860, he worked temporarily with Rudolf Pfähler in a joint photo studio in Stuttgart . But then he returned to Tübingen. In 1864 he decided to work together again, this time with his brother-in-law, the Stuttgart bookbinder Paul Karl August Straub. The studio was opened on April 1, 1864, but was unsuccessful, so the partners decided to stop working in Tübingen by the end of May 1864 and relocate to Stuttgart. The Atelier Helvig & Straub was operated in Stuttgart at Eberhardstrasse 59 until 1865 . After separating from Paul Straub, Helvig continued to work independently as a photographer until 1882. In 1882 he founded a lithographic institute, which existed beyond 1900.

No signed photos by Helvig could be found in Tübingen. A picture that has survived comes from the time we worked with Rudolf Pfähler:
