Life

The Stuttgart-born photographer started a collaboration with the Tübingen draftsman Carl Baumann, who was more than twice his age . It is not known how the two got to know each other and what prompted Impaler to come to Tübingen. They didn't have a studio, they just took photos outside with the “R. Pfähler and C. Baumann in Tübingen ”. Both the mention of the much younger Impaler as the first in the company name and a significant decrease in the quality of Baumann's photos after Pfähler's departure suggest that he was the trained photographer and that Baumann learned this art from him. The collaboration did not last long: Pfähler returned to Stuttgart in the course of 1856, where he was definitely working as a photographer again from 1857. In the course of 1860 he temporarily ran a studio together with Carl Helvig , who had arrived from Tübingen, under the name "Helvig & Pfähler". After separating from him, he worked alone, most recently at Paulinenstrasse 14. In 1862 he moved to Ludwigsburg. The studio in Paulinenstrasse was taken over by Louis Rachel (1831–1921).

Well-known work

  • 1855 Portrait of Wilhelm (von) Hertz (180 × 141 mm; Schiller National Museum Marbach )
  • 1855 New Aula (143 × 182 mm, very first photo of the New Aula, Corps Suevia Archive ). Especially when you compare the photo with Baumann's lithograph of the inauguration of the New Aula in 1845, it becomes clear that it breaks with the earlier tradition and suppresses the castle-like character of the building.
  • 1860 Father with sons and dog (from the Bock family) (salt paper painted over 225 × 182 mm; Stuttgart City Archives)
