Carl Herz (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Samuel Herz (born April 10, 1930 in Rockville Center , Long Island , † May 1, 1995 ) was a Canadian - American mathematician .

Life

Herz studied at Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1950 and received his doctorate in 1953 from Salomon Bochner at Princeton University ( Bessel Functions of Matrix Argument ). In 1953 he became an instructor, 1955 assistant professor, 1958 associate professor and 1963 professor at Cornell University. There he was a leader in the anti-Vietnam war demonstrations and refused to pay income tax while the war lasted. On the other hand, he was opposed to lowering admission standards for minority students. Because of this, he left Cornell University in 1969. 1969/70 he was at Brandeis University and from 1970 professor at McGill University . In 1981 he became a Canadian citizen.

He dealt with harmonic analysis and the theory of Lie groups . In the 1990s he classified all faithful representations of Lie groups by contact transformations of compact manifolds.

In 1985 he received the Jeffery Williams Prize . He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (1978) and President of the Canadian Mathematical Society from 1987 to 1989 . In 1962/63 he was a Sloan Research Fellow at the University of Paris-South in Orsay and was then a frequent guest scientist there. In 1957/58 and 1976/77 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1970 he was at the Mittag-Leffler Institute .
