Carl Hubert Cremer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Hubert Cremer (* 1858 in Uerdingen am Rhein; † February 27, 1938 in Bremen ) was a German travel exporter and well-known bird breeder. He is particularly important as a pioneer and patron of German and European bird lovers.

In 1892 he founded a travel export company, and in 1902 a ship supply company. In 1904 he became managing director of the Marina Deutsche Schiffsbedarf- und Export-Gesellschaft . During the First World War he was consul in the Netherlands with his seat in Amsterdam .

From 1914 Cremer was a partner and shareholder of Behringwerke Bremen und Marburg GmbH . An extensive correspondence from Cremer is kept in the Behring archive in Marburg.

His main interests in aviculture were starlings , weaver birds , cardinals , Australian parakeets and lovebirds . At times over 1000 birds lived in his breeding facilities. Without his involvement in the experiments of Hans Julius Duncker , the elucidation of the inheritance of color mutations in budgies and canaries would not have been possible in the 1920s. Cremer was chairman of the German Budgie Breeders' Association (DWV).

Consul Cremer Prize

The Consul Cremer Prize named after him is awarded as the highest award of the association for species protection, bird keeping and aviculture .
