The Association for Species Protection, Bird Keeping and Bird Breeding (AZ) eV is an association of German bird breeders . The association was founded as an exchange center for bird lovers and breeders in Germany eV in 1920 and currently has around 17,000 members. It consists exclusively of individual members. To a large extent, these have come together in over 350 local groups - spread across the Federal Republic of Germany . In addition, there are also 14 AZ regional groups. The association brings together breeders of exotic and native birds . The association has had its own information sheet for its members since 1954, the so-called "AZ-Vogelinfo (AZV)", in which specialist articles, breeding and experience reports and association reports are published monthly. The forerunners of the AZN were the "Birds of Far Lands", which appeared in 1921 under the editorship of Hans Duncker .

The AZ annually issues foot rings for its members , which are considered official.

The working groups

Due to the large number of bird species and breeding directions, there are five working groups that deal specifically with certain bird species. They are:

  • AZ-DWV German Budgie Breeders Association
  • AZ-AGZ Working group of breeders of large parakeet and parrot species
  • AZ-AEZ Working group of lovers of exotic grain and soft eaters
  • AZ-AFZ working group for color and shape canaries
  • AZ-AEV Working Group for European Birds and Carduelids

One chairman and two deputies - who are members of the AZ board - are available to manage the individual working groups. At the state level, the individual working groups are represented by delegates elected by the members of the state group.

The chairman and his deputies as well as the committee delegates of the individual regional groups are happy to answer all kinds of technical questions. Within the individual working groups there are special interest groups whose task is to promote the breeding of certain bird species / breeding forms.

Conservation through breeding

While the keeping and breeding of animals, especially birds, used to be primarily an end in itself for their own edification, the aspect of "species conservation through breeding" with non-domesticated birds comes more and more to the fore with increasing environmental destruction. The members of the Association for Species Protection, Bird Keeping and Bird Breeding (AZ) contribute to this in two ways. On the one hand, they cover the undisputed need for wild bird species by breeding them and, on the other hand, they are increasingly participating in so-called conservation breeding programs for particularly threatened bird species. We support the European zoological gardens in their work in the so-called European Conservation Breeding Programs (EEP).

Two of them, namely the EEP for the Balistar (Leucopsar rothschildi) and for the Socorrotaube (Zenaida graysoni) were initiated by the AZ. It has already been possible to preserve bird species through breeding in human care.

Species Protection and Breeding Fund (AZF)

In order to promote the goals of species conservation not only through breeding, AZ has set up its own fund, the Species Protection and Breeding Fund (AZF).

The following measures are funded from this:

  • Conservation breeding programs and similar projects
  • Programs and scientific research on special bird species (ethology etc.) and their habitats
  • Protection of habitats
  • Expatriation projects

Examples of funded projects include a. Breeding aviaries for endangered bird species in Wuppertal Zoo or in Cambodia in the ACCB breeding center. The fund is financed, among other things, by a portion of the membership fees and donations. The board of directors, with the involvement of the scientific advisory board, decides on the allocation of funds. The following people are currently on the advisory board: Prof. Franz Bairlein , Peter Berthold , Marcellus Bürkle, Norbert Kamphues, Michael Lierz , Claudia Mettke-Hofmann, Theo Pagel and René Wüst.

The AZ is a member of the Zoological Society for Species and Population Protection (ZGAP).

  1. the maintenance and promotion of expert bird keeping and breeding
  2. Combating unfair machinations in the bird lover and trade
  3. Contact and cooperation with scientific institutions that deal with ornithology or carry out research projects
  4. Conservation through breeding. Creation of breeding programs for certain species with the aim of conserving endangered bird species

The Consul Cremer Prize was launched on the occasion of the AZ annual general meeting in Heidelberg in 1959.

The prerequisites for the award are:

1. Special breeding services in the order of priority:

  • recognized, completed first breeding successes of previously considered to be hardly or not breedable species (world, European and German first breeding),
  • Breeding of verifiably rare species in succession or bird species that are considered to be difficult to breed. Further breeding with subsequent generations and establishment of breeding lines.

2. Recognized exceptional achievements in the field of bird lovering including special achievements for the AZ community.
