Franz Bairlein

Franz Xaver Bairlein (born December 7, 1952 in Oberndorf am Lech ) is a German ornithologist .

Live and act

After finishing school between 1959 and 1973, Bairlein studied biology, chemistry and physics at the University of Konstanz between 1973 and 1977 . Between 1977 and 1980 he completed a doctoral degree in biology at the University of Konstanz, where he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. Then he received a postdoctoral position at the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Psychology , Radolfzell ornithological . From 1982 to 1987 he was a research assistant in the Zoology Department of the Physiological-Ecological Section at the University of Cologne . In 1986 he completed his habilitation in zoology at the University of Cologne. From 1987 to 1990 he received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation and taught as an assistant professor in zoology at the University of Cologne. In 1988 there was a research year in the United States at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg . In 1990 Bairlein became director of the Helgoland ornithological station in Wilhelmshaven. In 1991 he completed his habilitation in zoology and ecology at the University of Oldenburg . Since 1992 he has been Professor of Zoology at the University of Oldenburg. Since 1998 he has been editor of the Journal of Ornithology . From 2001 to 2012 he was President of the German Ornithological Society .

Bairlein's research focuses on bird migration , the physiological mechanisms of weight gain in migratory birds and ecological work in resting areas along the migratory routes and in the winter quarters of European migratory birds. In addition, Bairlein took part in several research expeditions, including to the Algerian Sahara to research the trans-Sahara bird migration, to Morocco and Nigeria to the resting places of migratory birds and to the Ivory Coast to the winter quarters of Palearctic migratory birds. In 2003 he studied the endemic avifauna in French Polynesia . In 2008 he researched the migration of the wheatear in Alaska and Canada .

In 2010, Bairlein was elected President of the International Ornithological Union at the International Ornithological Congress in Campos do Jordão , Brazil, and thus President of the International Ornithological Congress 2014 in Tokyo. In 1998 Bairlein became a German delegate to the International Ornithological Committee and since 2002 he has been a member of the IOC board. In 2006 he was the organizer of the 24th International Ornithological Congress in Hamburg.
