Carl Leffers (born April 3, 1869 in Steinbild ; † July 12, 1929 in Delmenhorst ) was a German businessman and founder of Leffers AG , who was also a politician.

Life

Leffers came from an old Emsland merchant family. His father had a general store in the town where he was born. Leffers also learned the trade of merchant and the saddlery on the side. In 1894, he and his brother Heinrich Leffers (1865–1938) opened a manufactured goods store in Delmenhorst on Langen Strasse. From this small beginning, a large clothing store developed in the following years , which became the parent company of a number of branches. The business idea that was revolutionary at the time was to replace price negotiation with fixed price displays. The Leffers brothers were able to win the trust of their customers through cash sales, the possibility of exchanges and low prices. Even after the company was converted into a stock corporation, Leffers AG , the company remained family-owned. Until his death, Leffers and his brother Heinrich managed the business in Delmenhorst and the branches in Bremen , Vegesack , Meppen and Osnabrück . Three other brothers ran the branches in Oldenburg , Rüstringen , Lohne and Wildeshausen . Furthermore, the North German linen factory based in Delmenhorst belonged to Leffers' property. This company manufactured finished products for Leffers AG.

After a merger with the Sinn fashion stores in 1997, SinnLeffers GmbH is still a chain of department stores , the name of which refers to the company's founder.

In addition to his work as an entrepreneur, Leffers was also active in the political and church environment. Since 1904 he was a member of the Center Party on the city council of Delmenhorst and was its chairman from 1914 to 1918. From 1919 until his death he was a member of the magistrate and department head for the city's light and waterworks. From 1925 to 1928 Leffers was also a member of the Oldenburg Landtag and continued to be an active member of the Catholic parish of Delmenhorst and its church council.
