Carl Ludwig Deffner (born February 8, 1817 in Esslingen ; † June 11, 1877 there ) was a Württemberg entrepreneur, politician, geologist and mineralogist.

Life

Carl Deffner was the son of the entrepreneur and politician Carl Deffner . After the Latin school in Esslingen, he attended the polytechnic school in Stuttgart from 1832 to 1836 and then did an internship in his father's company. From 1837 to 1839 he attended the Polytechnic Institute in Berlin , he studied natural sciences.

After traveling in Sweden, Norway, England and France, he worked in his father's company, C. Deffner , from the beginning of the 1840s . After his father's death in 1846, he took over the management of the metal goods factory. In the course of the 1850s, Carl Deffner passed the company's business more and more to his younger brother Wilhelm Deffner (1829–1897).

As a result, he devoted himself more and more to geology and mineralogy. Among other things, he was significantly involved in researching the geological history of the Ries . With numerous publications and lectures, he built an excellent reputation as a mineralogist and geologist.

politics

From 1856 to 1870 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Württemberg Land estates . From 1868 to 1870 he was also a member of the customs parliament as a member of the constituency of Württemberg 6 ( Esslingen , Nürtingen , Schorndorf , Welzheim ) . There he represented the greater German point of view.

Honors

In 1876 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

After his death, his fellow citizens in Esslingen erected a monument, the Deffnerstein, for him.
