Carl Christian Ulrich Deffner (born August 4, 1789 in Ludwigsburg ; † October 26, 1846 in Esslingen ) was a German entrepreneur and politician .

After attending the Latin and Realschule in Ludwigsburg , Carl Deffner trained as a businessman in Güglingen . He then worked at the Seyfarth company in Siegen and at the Gastpar store in Stuttgart. In 1815 he became a partner in the Rudy paint shop in Esslingen, which he acquired in 1819 and continued under the name C. Deffner with the CDE mark (stands for Carl Deffner Esslingen). From 1826 to 1828 he had the paint shop enlarged and a sheet metal factory , later a foundry , printing shop , stamping shop and rolling mill built. In the following years, the company developed into one of the largest metal goods factories in Germany. From 1833 Deffner was a partner in the Hartmann brothers' cloth factory in Esslingen , the Württemberg shipping insurance company and the Neckardampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft . In 1837 he was a co-founder of a cotton factory . In 1846 he suggested the establishment of the Esslingen machine factory .

Carl Deffner was also a member of the board of directors of the southern German factory owners' association , committee member of the Society for the Promotion of Industry in Württemberg, member of the Commercial Arbitration Court, the Chamber of Commerce and the Württemberg Railway Commission. In Esslingen a street was named after Carl Deffner. In 1896 A. Gäckle created a chest relief that is attached to the building of the State Trade Museum in Stuttgart .

politics

Carl Deffner was a member of the Liberal Party . He was a long-time member first of the citizens' committee and then of the city council in Esslingen. On April 30, 1832, he took part in the protest meeting of the elected representatives in Bad Boll , he was a co-signer of the resolution for the early convocation of the state parliament. From 1833 until his death in 1846 he was a member of the state parliament .

family

Deffner was the son of the court miniature painter Friedrich Deffner (1758–1793) and Johanna Christiana nee Stoll. In 1816 he married Philippine Luise nee Walter († 1850), daughter of the castle administrator Daniel Walter from Sigmaringen . The couple had seven children, including Carl Ludwig Deffner (1817–1877), who later took over his father's business and was a member of the state parliament and member of the German customs parliament .
