Karl Matthias Schiffer (born October 2, 1867 in Süchteln , † 1930 in Berlin ) was a leading functionary of the Christian trade unions in Germany and since 1905 chairman of the general association of Christian trade unions in Germany. He was also a politician for the German Center Party .

education and profession

After attending primary school in Süchteln , Schiffer completed an apprenticeship as a velvet weaver . Later he worked as a cotton weaver and factory weaver.

Trade unionists

In 1895 he joined the local Catholic workers' association in Bocholt. In 1899 he was one of the founders of the Christian trade unions. From 1900 he was a full-time trade union official in the Christian trade unions . Between 1900 and 1904 he was also editor of the magazine “Christian Textile Workers”, the newspaper of the Central Association of Christian Textile Workers in Germany. In 1905 he was chairman of the general association of Christian trade unions in Germany.

Political party

Schiffer was a member of the German Center Party.

Mandates

Schiffer was a city councilor in Krefeld in 1903/04, and in Düsseldorf since 1907. He belonged to the Reichstag of the Empire from 1907 to 1918 for the constituency of Münster 3 Recklinghausen - Borken . His nomination as a candidate met with considerable resistance within the Center Party in 1907, because the upper-class and agrarian circles of the center wanted to hold on to the previous Reichstag member, Jakob Euler . From the election to the German National Assembly on January 19, 1919, he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly until his resignation in September .
