Carl Schlichting-Carlsen , completely Carl Peder August Schlichting-Carlsen , (born October 16, 1852 in Flensburg , † July 27, 1903 in Hellebæk ), was a Danish painter .

Life

Carl Schlichting-Carlsen was born as the son of the businessman Lorenz (Lorentz) Christian Carlsen and his wife Ida Cathrine, née Schlichting, in Flensburg, then under Danish administration, which came to Prussia in 1864. In 1866 he began training as a porcelain painter and then continued his education at the Technical University in Copenhagen, including with the later architectural painter and illustrator Josef Theodor Hansen (1848–1912). From October 1874 to spring 1878 he studied at the Copenhagen Art Academy in Charlottenborg Palace and later took a few winter half-years at the Free Study School (Kunstnernes Frie Studieskole). Schlichting-Carlsen's work has been represented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad since 1873 and has received several awards. He went on study trips to Paris , with Peder Mørk Mønsted to Switzerland and for half a year to southern Italy (1884), again to Switzerland (1886), to Geneva , to the Riviera and to Tunisia and Algeria (1887) and one more time to Italy (1902).

Carl Schlichting-Carlsen was one of the most productive Danish landscape painters around 1900 and was recognized by both art critics and the general public. After initially working as a flower and still life painter, from around 1870 he concentrated on landscape painting and oriented himself, among other things, on the work of his friend Peder Mørk Mønsted. He lived in Copenhagen (1883: Møntergade 2; Atelier Knabrostræde 3). He found his motifs mainly in and around the Copenhagen Zoo, in North Zealand in the vicinity of Hellebæk and on the occasion of his travels through Switzerland, Italy and North Africa. He died at the age of 50 and was buried in the Hornbæk parish cemetery.
