Carl Ludwig August Siegener (born September 4, 1798 in Celle ; † February 10, 1827 at Arroio Lichiguana near Bagé in Brazil ) was a Royal Hanoverian and Brazilian soldier in the field of rocket weapons . He is considered to be the "pioneer and first martyr of the Brazilian missile weapon".

Life

Siegener, son of the district master builder Johann Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Siegener and Johanna Dorothea Caroline Behrens, was born in the Electorate of Hanover at the time of the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover and grew up in the so-called " French era ".

Shortly after reaching the age of 15, he probably joined the new Hannoversche Jägercorps, the "Kielmannseggeschen Jäger" of Friedrich von Kielmansegg as a volunteer on September 17, 1813 , received his departure on April 21, 1814 and moved to the field battalion in Bremen as an ensign. Siegener joined the Hanoverian Army on May 6, 1814 as an ensign in the 2nd Infantry Regiment, which was initially stationed in Celle , where he learned about the use of Congreve missiles and was later awarded the Waterloo Medal .

Siegener was enlisted in the Brazilian army and arrived in Rio de Janeiro in February 1826 . He was assigned to the 3rd Grenadier Battalion as a tenente . During the Argentine-Brazilian war , Siegener suggested to his superiors, among them Field Marshal Gustav Heinrich Gottlieb von Braun , who came from Prussia, that Congreve missiles be used in the battle of Ituzaingó . Braun had got to know the missiles during a stay in Europe and wanted to introduce them to the Brazilian army. On February 7, 1827, Siegener prepared three rockets for the first demonstration in front of the General Staff. Due to the damp weather, he chose a larger ignition charge than the manufacturer had intended. After the ignition, the first two rockets flew significantly shorter distances than planned, the third exploded at the launch site, seriously injuring Siegener. He was supposed to be taken to a hospital in Caçapava do Sul , but died three days later on the way there.

As Helmut Andrä put it, Siegener went down in Brazilian history through a note in the war diary of the engineer lieutenant and surveyor Anton Adolf Friedrich Seweloh .
