Life

CWA Strandberg began studying in 1837 and graduated with a law degree in 1847 . In the same year he married. He died sitting at his desk in 1877 - a fate that befell his successor at the Swedish Academy, Viktor Rydberg . Strandberg wrote the text of the Swedish royal anthem Ur svenska hjärtans djup en gång in 1844 . The reason for this was not necessarily enthusiasm for the royal family, but rather the wish that the king should start a war of aggression against Russia in order to retake Finland . Strandberg himself had sympathy for republican and revolutionary ideas.

Strandberg was one of the most famous skalds in the post-romantic period in Sweden. His first poem was shaped by politics and influenced by the political poetry of Young Germany . He wrote it as a student in Lund and used stormy expressions to describe the young people's striving for freedom and their sympathy for the oppressed people, which moved many Swedes in the 1840s, as well as their hatred of Russia.

Gradually he created his own style, which, similar to Johan Ludvig Runeberg's style, was characterized by sonorous, sometimes drastic expressions, but also had a certain brevity. His first collection of poems appeared under the warlike title Sånger i panser (Songs in the tank) and contained many glowing, ruthless poems, e.g. B. Vaticinum , which, like many others, called for war against the “ Goliath of the World” (Russia) (Finland, I want to call) . The King's Song also belonged to this collection.

This collection of poems was followed by Vilda rosor (wild roses) and others, which, however, later developed to more maturity and to the moderate realism of Runeberg. In addition to his own poems, Strandberg also translated foreign poems into Swedish , including the poems of Lord Byron .
