Carla Swart (born November 26, 1987 in Graaf-Reinet ; † January 19, 2011 in the province of Free State ) was a South African cyclist .

In 2009, Carla Swart finished sixth overall on the Tour of Prince Edward Island . The following year she was tenth in the individual race at the road world championships in Geelong and eighth in the road race at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi . In addition, she was third in the South African road championship and second in the junior ranking of the Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin .

On January 19, 2011, Carla Swart, who had lived in the United States for many years , was hit by a truck while training in South Africa and suffered fatal injuries. She had turned in the street because she had lost her bike computer, presumably forgetting that in South Africa - unlike in the USA - there is left-hand traffic and thus overlooked a truck approaching from behind and collided with it head-on .

The President of the South African Cycling Association, Hendrik Lemmer , said after Swart's death: “I think she would have been the greatest cyclist in our history if she had lived.” (Engl. = “If she had lived on, in my opinion she would be our greatest cyclist History has become. ”) In memory of her , a Carla Swart Memorial Scholarship was established by Lees-McRae College , which she attended in the USA .
