History and etymology

Carlewitz was first mentioned in 1556 as Kartelwisse . The city of Marlow states on an information board in the village that the name could be derived from the Old Slavic Krat for mole or the West Slavic family name Karat . Archaeological investigations showed that there must have been a Slavic settlement before . This was called Carlevitz in 1653. In 1786 the place came into the possession of the Ribnitz monastery and stayed there until at least 1911. Then the inspector of the manor Eicksen, a Mr. Petersdorf, took over the place. A manor house dates from this time. In 1918 the place was connected to the electrical power grid. 72 inhabitants are recorded from 1930. During this time, the children went to school in the neighboring manor house in Tressentin. After this manor house found new owners in the course of a foreclosure auction in 1933 , a new school building was built on the border between Carlewitz and Freudenberg.

Carlewitz was shaped by agriculture for many centuries . In the time of the GDR , the farmers joined the LPG Jahkendorf . It was converted into an agricultural cooperative after reunification .
