Carlina Curetum is a plant from the genus Eberwurzen ( carlina ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

Carlina curetum is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that usually reaches heights of 20 to 50, rarely 10 to 80 centimeters. The upper stalk leaves are linear-lanceolate, eight to ten times as long as they are wide and almost reduced to the midrib. They have three to five pinnate lobes, each with two slender and sturdy thorns . The terminal spines are 20 to 30 millimeters long and have a narrow base. The outer bracts are 35 to 60 millimeters in size and linear-lanceolate. Their side spines are 14 to 26 millimeters long, their end spines usually 27, rarely 21 to 34 millimeters. The usually one to three, rarely up to five heads have a diameter of up to 16 millimeters.

The flowering period extends from July to October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Systematics and occurrence

Carlina curetum (Syn .: Carlina corymbosa subsp. Curetum (Halácsy) Rech. F.) Is divided into two subspecies:

  • Carlina curetum subsp. curetum is endemic to Crete . The species grows in Phrygana , hedgehog cushion heather , light forests and clay areas on limestone at altitudes of seldom 300, mostly 900 to 2100 meters.
  • Carlina curetum subsp. orientalis Meusel & Kästner occurs in Israel , Lebanon and Syria .
