The Carlo-Schmid-Gymnasium is located in the Derendingen district of Tübingen . It bears the name of the German politician and constitutional lawyer Carlo Schmid and has been an independent high school since 1988.
history
The grammar school has its origins on October 1, 1983 as a branch of the grammar schools on Uhlandstrasse. It was not until September 10, 1988 that he was able to celebrate his independence as a Feuerhägle grammar school (Feuerhägle is a district of Derendingen). It carried this name until December 12, 1989, when it was renamed after Carlo Schmid.
In 2014 the grammar school had four classes with a total of around 850 students. They are supervised and taught by around 85 teachers.
NBC protection room
The decision to build the grammar school came at the height of the Cold War in March 1980. Therefore, when building the underground car park, it was planned to function as an NBC protection room for parts of the Tübingen population. Around 1,500 people could have found protection in the bunker in the event of a nuclear attack. Several chemical toilets, water tanks and blankets were kept ready just in case. The official abolition of the function as a nuclear bunker did not take place until 2005. Even today you can recognize the former secondary function of the underground car park by the thick steel doors, the extremely heavy protective gates at the entrance and the locks at the entrance to the grammar school.
Educational offer
All students continue English as their first foreign language from Grade 5. You can also choose between a normal bilingual train (in grades 5 and 6 only intensified English lessons but no subject subjects in English) and a "Bili-Plus" train (already in English from class biology and natural phenomena). From year 6 onwards you can choose French or Latin as your second foreign language . In grade 8, the students choose either a third foreign language ( Russian or Spanish ) or the NWT profile subject ( natural science and technology ). Various activities (e.g. method and project days, diverse working groups) that enable high-quality equipment in all departments (e.g. in the IT area) and the existence of special facilities (e.g. workshops, competence center "Life Science") the students to choose personal focus from a differentiated offer.
Language exchange
The language exchange with the partner schools has a long tradition. There is an exchange, depending on the chosen foreign language sequence, with schools in France, Italy or in Petrozavodsk . There is also an exchange with the Indian city of Kolkata .
